The Piano Sings – Wesley Music Centre
Jennifer Hou – The Piano Sings – Wesley Music Centre – March 2024
Returning to the Wesley Lunchtime Concert Series, pianist Jennifer Hou presented The Piano Sings, a program exploring the lyrical inspiration that underpins some of the greatest works in piano literature. Ross Edwards’ Sea Star Fantasy, inspired by the Marian hymn Ave Maris Stella (“Hail Star of the Sea”), set a serene and meditative tone. Alexander Scriabin’s Étude Op.42 No.5 in C# minor followed with soaring, song-like melodies layered over his signature intense and harmonically complex textures. The recital concluded with César Franck’s monumental Prélude, Choral et Fugue, where Franck invigorates the traditional form by inserting a chorale into the middle of the work, adding a third theme to weave into a climactic cadenza.
